This article aims to inform you about several things that you need to know before you decide whether moving to Norway to study medicine is the right decision for you. We will focus on things like necessary grades, tuition fees, deadlines and more.

OVERVIEW

In Norway, it takes about 6 years to complete your studies and gain a Doctor of Medicine title.

This is two years shorter than in most other countries.

Instead of doing a six year long bachelor’s degree and then a two year long masters, you’ll do a four year long degree in Bachelor of Medicine and then go on to do two years of masters.

You can study in Norwegian, English, and additionally, some courses are even offered in German or Russian.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

• You need to be at least 17 years old.
• In general, you should have achieved a grade over 50?ross all your science-related higher-level subjects. (i.e., over 50?ross your science-related A-Levels) but the entry requirements differ depending on what country you are originally from.
• If you come from the United Kingdom you will need to provide the university with your GCSE certificate, and your A-level certificate with at least 3 A-Levels.
• If you come from America will need to provide proof of your ‘High School Graduation Diploma and 3 Advanced Placement Exams with at least grade 3’.
• For students coming from India, the GSU requirement is you have an Indian School Certificate (ISC Standard 12) issued by CISCE and 1 year of university education.
• For those coming from China the GSU requirement is that you have a Senior High School Graduation Certificate and 1 year of university education.
• If you come from Nepal the GSU requires you to have a School Leaving Certificate Examination with grades of XI and XII, and 1 year of university education.
• If you gained your earlier education in Sri Lanka the GSU states that to study in Norway, you need a General Certificate of Education Advanced level (GCE A-Level) with 3 subjects on A-level with grade S/Ordinary Pass.
• We recommend checking out the GSU List. This is a list where, under each country, you will find the specific educational requirements you need to be accepted into a Norwegian university.
• You will also be required to have a certificate to prove your English efficiency.

ENTRANCE EXAM

In some cases, your qualifications might not be recognized in Norway, in which case you will have to do an entrance exam, that will test your knowledge of scientific topics.

If you are applying for an English-taught course and are not a native English speaker, you will need to provide a certificate proving your English proficiency.

These could be TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, IELTS or C1 Advanced.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

The universities will usually want you to send the application directly to them or in some cases, you can apply through the NUCAS website. In your application, you will need to provide

• Two reference letters
• Your CV
• A letter of motivation
• A completed application/filled out the form that you can find on the university website
• A copy of your passport
• Your grades
• Proof of English efficiency.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

You have until early March to send in your application.

APPLICATION TIMELINE

International students have between December and March to send in their applications.

You should get a response around mid-to-late May.

FEES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Most universities in Norway are tuition-free for all students, including international students. If you want to go study at a private university, you will be expected to pay between about £5,894 to £7,577 a year for a bachelor’s program and about £7,577 to £15,996 a year for a master’s program.
