Anyone who loves Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths disciplines and wants to contribute to national security is an ideal candidate for the Defence STEM Undergraduate Sponsorship (DSUS) Scheme. The scheme opens the opportunity to join the Ministry of Defence (MOD) Civil Service, Army, Royal Navy, or Royal Air Force as Engineers or Technical Officers. You may even develop a career in the nuclear industry with relevant skills.

As a defence professional, you can work in a high-profile role and build a distinctive portfolio that sets you apart from other STEM aspirants. But joining the defence industry requires attributes, such as an inquisitive mind, a logical approach to problem-solving, and a hunger to learn continuously. As a part of the programme, you will need to commit to working in the Defence Nuclear Enterprise (DNE) for at least three years after completing your graduation.

Here are a few key facts you need to know about the DSUS Scheme.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Qualifying for the DSUS scheme requires you to fulfill the following eligibility criteria:

  • Studying an undergraduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths (STEM) approved by the Engineering Council

OR

  • A degree in the designated list
  • Open to UK nationals only

Applicants can apply at any stage of their studies from first to final year. They should be willing to undertake paid summer work placements for up to 45 days. Further, they have to work within the DNE for a minimum of three years after graduation.

OPPORTUNITIES DURING GRADUATION

The DSUS Scheme opens up various opportunities during the completion of your STEM degree. The scheme covers the following:

  • Tuition fees amounting to a maximum of £9,250 per year for the remaining period of studies up to three years
  • A bursary of £5,000 per year for the remaining period of studies
  • Paid work placements across the UK to give you a hands-on experience of the DNE

OPPORTUNITIES AFTER GRADUATION

The opportunities offered by the DSUS Scheme extend beyond the completion of your undergraduate studies. After getting your degree, you get a permanent job within the DNE, with a contract of 37 hours per week. The starting role is that of an Executive Officer (EO), with a current minimum salary of £27,080. After two years with the organisation, you may be promoted to the position of Higher Executive Officer (HEO), with a current minimum salary of £33,830). You can find roles at several locations across the UK. The DNE supports young professionals to develop skills and gain professional accreditations.
