American College Testing (ACT) is a standardised test that students need to take for admission to undergraduate schools in the US and Canada. The online exam evaluates the verbal, written, mathematical, and scientific skills of the candidates. It is conducted by ACT, a non-profit organisation of the same name. Here are the key details candidates must know to register and appear for ACT 2023.

The purpose of the ACT exam is to assess a high school student\'s readiness for college education. It also provides international colleges with a common data point they can use to compare all applicants for their programmes.
ACT exam comprises four sections- English, Math, Reading, and Science. It also has an optional Writing section with a 30-40 minute writing prompt that defines an issue and two perspectives on it. However, students are not scored on this section. Here are the details of the ACT exam pattern-
Subjects | Duration | Total Questions | Sub-sections |
English | 45 minutes | 75 Questions | -Usage/Mechanics (Punctuation, sentence structure, grammar and usage) -Rhetorical Skills (strategy, organisation, style) |

Optional writing test | 40 minutes | One writing prompt | |
Total | 3 hours and 35 minutes (excluding breaks) | 215 questions |
Each section is scored on a scale of 1 to 36 points, with the average of all four exams making the composite score. Students taking the optional writing test get a writing score on the same scale, but the score is not included in the composite score. The test results are available online within eight weeks.
