The Graduate Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) is a selection test for the candidates applying to study medicine and related niches such as dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, and veterinary science. The test is applicable for British, Irish, and Australian universities. It was formerly the Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test for Australian institutions but now applies to medical schools across the UK. It is conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and the Consortium of Graduate Medical Schools. GAMSAT can give you a head start with GEM (graduate entry medicine). Here are the eligibility criteria for GAMSAT 2023-
A noteworthy fact is that candidates need not necessarily have a sciences or biology background to sit the GAMSAT. Even an arts student can apply for it. Candidates can appear for the test any number of times, but its validity is only up to 2 years.
The GAMSAT is a graduate test applicable to students planning to pursue a master’s education in the field of medicine (including disciplines like pharmacy, optometry, dentistry, and vet sciences.
GAMSAT is a day-long digital test to be taken at a test centre. It comprises three sections, which are to be completed in five hours. Here are the key details of the exam sections-
There is no break between the first two sections. However, a lunch break of one hour is given after them.

GAMSAT is conducted twice a year, in the months of March and September. Candidates sitting in the March exam gave a limited choice in UK test centres in London, Bristol, Derry, Leeds, and Liverpool. Registrations open in November and close sometime in late January. More choices are available in the UK test centres in the September sitting. Since GAMSAT is a graduate test, students with a bachelor’s degree can sit for the exam.
The test is competitive, so you need to prepare for the exam to get good scores. The best way to do it is by solving practice papers.
Since the GAMSAT exam is conducted by ACER, candidates must register themselves on the ACER website.
It is not the same as the medical school applications to be made through UCAS before October 15.
You can select a test centre location according to your convenience, but getting it depends on the availability of slots.
It is better to register sooner than later to get a centre of your choice.
