The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is an exam for medical admission in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean Islands, and Australia. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) conducts this computer-based test to evaluate a candidate’s knowledge and understanding of various scientific concepts required for a career in medicine and healthcare. MCAT scores are valid for only up to 3 years, while some colleges and universities may only accept them up to two years old.

Exam Pattern

The MCAT syllabus tests the candidate’s knowledge of

  • Physical and biological sciences
  • Verbal reasoning
  • Writing skills

New sections like social, psychological, and biological foundations of behavior have been added to the test in 2015.

The MCAT 2023 exam lasts for 6 hours and 15 minutes, with the seated duration being 7 hours and 27 minutes. It includes breaks, optional sections, and additional questions that are not a part of the scored exam. The exam comprises four main sections, which are as follows:

The result is available online within 30-35 days after the test day. The MCAT 2023 result has five different scores- 4 scores for the individual sections and one score as an aggregate of all four sectional scores. Here are the details of the scoring scale-

  • Individual sections are scored on a point scale of 118 to 132
  • The aggregate isscored on a point scale of 472 to 528

A candidate can take the exam only seven times in a lifetime.

Applicants testing outside the US, US Territories or Canada are required to pay an additional $120 International fee. International fees are non-refundable if the registration is cancelled.

Practice exam

MCAT is a highly competitive exam that requires diligent preparation. Candidates can prepare for it by solving the practice tests and papers of the previous year available online.

Registration Procedure

Candidates planning to sit in MCAT 2023 should book their test date in advance to prevent a longer wait time. 

To register for the test, they must select a preferred Pearson VUE testing centre in their state or home country. 

Candidates appearing from US territories need not pay a scheduling fee, while those choosing international locations have to pay it. 

They can choose the exam dates as late as ten days before the exam.
