British Heart Foundation offers MBPhD Studentships for talented students to complete a PhD in cardiovascular science before completion of their medical degree. These studentships are restricted to UK institutions that have recognised MBPhD programmes.

Duration of the Scholarship: Two to three years, according to the university’s scheme

Benefits:

  1. Student stipend at current BHF rates.
  2. Tuition fees at standard home student rate (set by the research institution).
  3. Research consumables directly attributable to the project, usually less than £10,000 per year.
  4. Travel funding of up to £1,000 to present research at or attend scientific meetings relevant to the grant.

APPLICATION DETAILS

Eligibility Requirements:

Entry Requirements: Pre-selection of the student by the university’s MBPhD programme directorate.

Who can apply:

  1. The online application form must be completed by an established investigator who will be the supervisor and may be for a named student only.
  2. The primary supervisor must devote a minimum of 10% of their time to supervising the student and a second supervisor should also be included.

How to apply:

Please read the grant types and grant guidelines before applying to the scholarship.

Applicants need to prepare a detailed research proposal (in Arial font size not smaller than 12 points) that complies with the instructions and eligibility criteria outlined in the specific grant guidelines.

  1. Log onto the online application portal and select the appropriate grant type.
  2. All applications, except for Strategic Initiatives, must be submitted online using our Grants Management System (GMS).
  3. New users will need to register before they submit an application. Existing users should sign in with their email address and their password and should update their profile if necessary.
  4. For online applications, ensure you have included all the items in the Case for Support checklist in your PDF attachment. The PDF file size must not exceed 20MB.
  5. Ensure that your application complies with the general terms described in Essential Information.

Case for Support:

You will be asked to attach a single PDF document to your online application form containing the following information:

  1. For resubmissions, include an unedited copy of the original feedback followed by a detailed response, limited to 3 sides of A4, explaining how the revised application has changed from the original submission.
  2. Title of the proposed research.
  3. Abstract of the proposed investigation in 200 words or less.
  4. Background to the project and pilot data.
  5. Original hypothesis.
  6. Experimental details and design of proposed investigation.
  7. Power calculations.
  8. Expected value of results.
  9. List of references relevant to the proposed project.
  10. List of recent relevant publications from supervisor.
  11. Appendices should be a maximum of 3 sides of A4 containing only tables or figures essential to the understanding of the application. Research papers whether published, in press or in preparation may not be attached (although hyperlinks can be provided).

Sections 2-8 must not exceed six A4 sides. The PDF file size must not exceed 20MB.

Please ensure Arial font size 12 is used. If this font size is not used, the application will be rejected prior to formal consideration.

Additional document uploads required on Case for Support page of the application form:

  1. Full CV of the candidate including list of publications and academic email address.
  2. Letter of support from the faculty tutor of clinical sciences.
  3. Copy of university scheme rules.

Additional document uploads that will be requested within pages on the application form:

  1. Supporting letters from collaborators.
  2. Intellectual property agreements where relevant.
  3. Valid copy of ethical approval if relevant.

Assessment Process:

Once the candidate submits the online application, he will be acknowledged within 24 hours and we will advise you when you can expect the result. A decision will be reached by the Fellowships Committee (four meetings a year) after it has considered external peer review reports. Allow six months from submission to decision.
