Biology is a popular degree subject and is the study of living creatures; it is heavily concerned with health and science so most tend to take career routes in this area, though this doesn’t mean there aren’t other options for you.

The common jobs many people become are academic researcher, microbiologist, pharmacologist, and marine biologist, and many others.

Here is one of the most popular careers graduates go on to after finishing their degree in biology, their job goals, and how much they earn. The handy table class='table table-striped's below each section will tell you the approximate ultimate earning potential you can expect, and the likely career progression path you might follow to do that career – and the top ten employers hiring candidates.

ACADEMIC RESEARCHERS - WHO ARE THEY?

Academic researchers are people who conduct and carry out investigations or research, with the intention of obtaining new information and improving our current understanding of the topic of research. They would spend their days writing and publishing papers on their work in peer-reviewed journals.

They will also write down reports or books, or even help others write books with their expertise. Often, they’ll work at universities or research institutes, and will speak at lectures depending on the type of academic researcher they are. For example, you can be a PhD researcher, research associate, or high education lecturer, mostly working at universities. Academic researchers also supervise students at these universities and generally share their knowledge in their area of specialisation.

Biology is a very competitive subject area, so work experience is crucial.
