In this article, we focus on informing you of everything you need to know before applying to a medical course in Singapore.

OVERVIEW

There are two main universities in Singapore that teach medicine. These are the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • For both universities, you need to have gained high A-Level qualifications in chemistry and either physics or biology.
  • If you come from a non-English speaking country, you will need to prove your English proficiency.
  • This can be done by passing an English language test.
  • Some of these tests include the IELTS, TOEFL, the C1 Advanced, and others.
  • If you are thinking of applying to Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine you will need to score at least a six in writing, and a six overall in the IELTS. If you are taking the TOEFL the minimum score you need to get is 90.

ENTRANCE EXAM

  • If you are looking to apply to the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, you will need to take the BMAT.
  • If you are applying to the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, you will need to part-take in the focused skills assessment.
  • This will take up to two hours.
  • Here you will need to take part in a task-based station, a group station, a role play station, an interview station, and more.
  • For example, in the role play station, you will be assessed on your interactions with an actor.
  • Or in the group station, you will work with other candidates to complete times tasks.
  • These assessments take place throughout April.
  • There is one around mid-April that takes place online. But all the other ones must be done in person.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

  • For the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, you can apply through the  website.
  • For the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, you can also apply online.

In your application you should include the following:

  • A copy of your grades
  • If you are applying to the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, you will need to provide your BMAT results.
  • You will also need to write a personal statement
  • References (2x)

When applying to the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine you will need to create a medicine portfolio.

In this, you will need to include

  • A personal statement that cannot be longer than 500 words.
  • A list of your achievements from the last two to three years
  • School grades and school reports
  • Two references

APPLICATION DEADLINE

In most cases, the application deadline is around mid-March.

This can differ depending on what academic qualifications you have so do be sure to double-check if this date is applicable for you.

APPLICATION TIMELINE

The application usually opens around mid-October but as mentioned previously this might differ depending on your qualifications so do double-check the website.

FEES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The tuition fees for international students are around £28,000 per year.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

If you have received the MOE Tuition Grant your tuition will be lowered to around £19,000 per year. To receive this grant international students will need to apply for it and agree to work in Singapore for three years after they graduate.
