The purpose is to get certified by The Japan Foundation, the designated Japanese agency that conducts the exam. It is held twice a year in multiple global locations.
All non-native Japanese speakers can appear for the JLPT exam without any restrictions on age. Eligibility also extends to holders of Japanese citizenship.
