Exam Pattern

The TOEFL exam is conducted in three versions-

• TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) is the most popular version of the exam.

• TOEFL iBT Home Edition can be taken from your home. However, a human proctor monitors candidates online.
• TOEFL Test on Paper is taken in two sessions, with Reading, Listening, and Writing sections conducted at a test centre and the Speaking section at your home within three days of the other sections.

Once you choose a version that works for you, it is time to understand the exam pattern so that you can prepare for it. Here are the modules of TOEFL exam-

• Listening: The section has 4-6 academic lecture excerpts and 2-3 general conversations regarding universities. Candidates have to attempt 39 questions in41-57 minutes.
• Reading: The section has3-4 passages of 700 words from a variety of subjects along with 30-40 questions. The total time duration for the reading section is 54 to 72 minutes.

• Writing: Candidates have to write two tasks- integrated and independent- of 500-600 words each. It is often the hardest section and lasts for 50 minutes.
• Speaking: The section has one independent and three integrated parts. It comprises6 questions, with the first two being on familiar topics and the rest being short readings, lectures, and conversations. The test is for 17 minutes.

Important Dates

Test takers must register for the TOEFL exam beforehand as per the availability of dates. While they get around 50 exam dates per year, the slots fill up fast. Candidates must check the official website to register well in advance. The result is available within six days of the test. The range of scores for each section is between 0-30, and the average score is around 90. A score over 100 is considered good as it gives you a good chance of landing a seat in one of the top universities. TOEFL scores are valid for two years.

International Students

International students seeking admission to top-ranking universities must clear TOEFL with the scores specified in the eligibility criteria of individual universities.
