The PCE (Pruebas de Competencias Específicas), or Specific Competence Tests are exams for international students seeking admission to universities in Spain. The exam was formerly known as UNED Entrance Exam “Selectividad” in Spanish. These tests evaluate an individual’s skills and knowledge to pursue a university education in the country. The content of the test varies according to the course chosen by the student. Here is an overview of the PCE for students planning to appear for it in 2023.
The PCE is for international students who have completed previous studies outside Spain, irrespective of their nationality. Someone who is born in Valencia but has completed high school in the US will have to appear for the exam if they wish to enroll in a Spanish university. Effectively, students who are not a part of the Spanish educational system but wish to access universities in the country have to appear for the tests.
The PCE enables students to improve their grades before applying to Spanish universities. It is not one big test but many small ones on specific subjects they can choose according to the programme they want to enroll in.
The PCE exam follows a diverse pattern and is divided into four categories. These include-
Each category comprises several subjects, and each subject follows a specific exam format. It may include MCQs, essay questions, and/or practical exercises. You may request a paper in English in addition to Spanish, though it is mandatory to attempt the exam in Spanish. A candidate can choose a maximum of 6 subjects according to the ones their chosen universities weigh the most. Experts recommend choosing at least four subjects.
UNEDassis gives a maximum score of 10 points. Additionally, each university has its own weighting system, where some subjects weigh more than others. You can check the requirements from the ones you want to enroll in and maximize your marks by appearing for high-weightage subjects.
The registration fee for the exam is €240.
